NIO ET5: what to know
The NIO ET5 is a mid-size electric sedan from Shanghai-based NIO, positioned against the Tesla Model 3 and BMW 3 Series. The standard car pairs a 75 kWh NMC battery (70.5 kWh usable) with a 585 km (364 mi) CLTC rating — or 550 km (342 mi) on China's older NEDC cycle. Because it's a swap-capable NIO, the same body can also run 100 kWh or 150 kWh packs through NIO's Power Swap network, which trade the depleted pack for a full one in about three minutes.
On charging, the ET5's standard pack peaks at 130 kW on DC fast charging and takes 11 kW on AC — modest against the 800 V Chinese competition, which is exactly why NIO leans on battery swap instead of raw charge speed. In China the car uses the national GB/T connector for both AC and DC; European-market ET5s ship with a CCS2 port.
In China the ET5 starts around ¥298,000 (≈$41,700) with the battery included, dropping to roughly ¥230,000 under NIO's Battery-as-a-Service subscription, where you rent the pack monthly instead of buying it. None of that is available in the United States: the ET5 is not sold here, has never been EPA- or NHTSA-certified, and does not qualify for any US federal EV tax credit.
CLTC range vs real-world
China's NEDC and CLTC test cycles both run optimistic — they use gentler speed profiles than US or European tests. The same 75 kWh ET5 rated 585 km CLTC / 550 km NEDC falls to 445 km (277 mi) on Europe's stricter WLTP cycle.
The ET5 has never been through the US EPA cycle, which is typically harsher still than WLTP. A realistic expectation for mixed highway driving is roughly 250–280 miles from the standard pack, not the 364-mile CLTC headline — and less in cold weather or at sustained high speed. Swap in the 100 kWh or 150 kWh pack and that real-world figure climbs proportionally.

NIO ET5 FAQ
- How far does the NIO ET5 go on a charge?
- The standard 75 kWh ET5 is rated 585 km (364 mi) CLTC, 550 km (342 mi) NEDC, and 445 km (277 mi) on the stricter WLTP cycle. Expect roughly 250–280 miles of real-world highway range. NIO's swappable 100 kWh and 150 kWh packs extend that significantly.
- What charge port does the NIO ET5 use?
- In China the ET5 uses the national GB/T connector for both AC and DC charging. European-market cars use CCS2. Its bigger charging story is battery swap: instead of plugging in, ET5 owners can drive into a NIO Power Swap station and exchange the whole pack in about three minutes.
- Can I buy a NIO ET5 in the United States?
- No. The ET5 is not sold new in the US, has never been federally safety- or emissions-certified, and would face the stacked ~102.5% tariff on Chinese EVs plus the connected-vehicle software rules. NIO has announced no US-market plans.
- Does the NIO ET5 qualify for the US federal EV tax credit?
- No. The credit only applies to qualifying vehicles sold and assembled for the US market, and the ET5 is not sold here at all. The federal clean-vehicle credit is also being sunset, so even eligible models are on borrowed time.

Specs verified May 2026 against NIO's official ET5 spec page, EV Database, and EVKX. Range quoted on three cycles (NEDC/CLTC/WLTP) because China-cycle figures overstate real-world range; the ET5 has never been EPA-tested. Prices are China-market and approximate in USD (1 RMB ≈ $0.14) — verify before quoting.
